SYLVIA WOODS

Sylvia Woods was a pioneer in the African American liberation and labor movements, fought sex discrimination, and helped found the National Alliance Against Racism.

In the forties, she helped organize the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 330, and in 1946, she helped draft a resolution that the UAW take a stand against sex discrimination. She was later elected secretary-treasurer of the local for a two-year term. After the war, Woods worked to assist laid off women.
